Student Exchange

The University of the Arts Helsinki receives approximately 100 international exchange students every year. Would you like to be one of them?


The International Relations Offices are responsible for matters regarding student, teacher and staff international exchange. If you are interested in coming to the University of the Arts Helsinki on teacher, staff or student exchange, first contact the International Exchange Coordinator at your home institution who then contacts the international office of the academy in question. As an exception the Academy of Fine Arts accepts free movers who can contact the international office directly (see below). 

The University of the Arts Helsinki International Relations team is also responsible for preliminary coordination for individuals who wish to apply for a Fulbright Scholarship in order to be affiliated with the University of the Arts Helsinki. For details, please see further academy specific information below.


International students accepted on the basis of agreements (Erasmus, Nordplus, FIRST, North-South-South, Fulbright, bilateral agreements) do not pay tuition fees.

Student Exchange: Information for Incoming Applicants

Who can apply?

The Sibelius Academy accepts exchange student applications from all Erasmus+ eligible institutions. 
In addition, SibA has Bilateral Exchange Agreements with partner institutions outside Europe.
Contact your home institution's International Office to find out whether you can apply to Sibelius Academy for exchange.

Application schedule

The application round for the Academic Year 2020-2021 will be open from January 10 to February 28, 2020.
The results will be announced in April–May 2020.

Schedule of the academic year 2019–2020 (to be confirmed)

  • Autumn semester: September 1 – December 18, 2019
  • Spring semester: January 7 – May 31, 2020

The Theatre Academy accepts exchange students from partner institutions we have an Agreement with (Erasmus, Nordplus Norteas, Bilateral, FIRST-ARTSMO, North-South-South, Fulbright).

Exchange students


If you are a degree student enrolled in a university with which the Academy of Fine Arts has an exchange agreement (ERASMUS+, KUNO/NORDPLUS, bilateral), please contact first the International Office of your home university. Once you have been nominated as an exchange student by your university, we will send you a link to the application form.

There are no tuition fees for exchange students. 


Non-degree students


If there is no agreement between the universities: you should apply for non-degree studies. The Academy of Fine Arts may accept art students from other art universities if the applicant fulfils the artistic requirements. The non-degree studies are payable.


Non-degree students should also fulfil English language requirement (level B1 / 3), unless you are a native English, Finnish or Swedish speaker, or you have obtained your general education or completed a university degree taught in English, Swedish or Finnish.



The recognised English language tests and their minimum score requirements:

• TOEFL (IBT = Internet Based Test, PBT = Paper Based Test)
Total score: 73 (IBT), 533 (PBT)

• IELTS (Academic)
Overall Band Score: 5.5

• Cambridge FCE/CAE/CPE (FCE=First Certificate in English, CAE = Certificate of Advanced English, CPE = Certificate of Proficiency in English)
Grades accepted: A, B, C

• Pearson Test of English (Academic)
Total Score: 43

Please note that IELTS, TOEFL and PTE test results are valid for two years from the test date.

            15 October (spring term Jan-May) and

            31 March (autumn term Sept-Dec and the whole academic year Sept-May)


How to apply


Please contact to obtain a link to the application form. Please mention your current home university in order to define your student status (exchange/non-degree student). 


Appendices to be included in the application are listed below. Please note that appendices submitted separately or without the application form are not considered.


All applicants should submit:

  • a motivational letter describing why you would like to study at the Academy of Fine Arts and what your expectations and aims of the studies are

  • a portfolio in which the applicant shows a selection of his/her works of art 

  • a short CV describing your previous studies, work experience, art projects, exhibitions and other relevant information in chronological order

Applicants for non-degree studies should also submit:

  • English language certificate (please see instructions above)


Selection results will be informed by email within 5-6 weeks of the application deadline.
