Tuultenpesä: Vindstilla

Tuultenpesä is a Finnish-Swedish ensemble specialising in folk wind instruments. It got its start from a collaboration between Finnish ensemble Wind on Wind and Swedish Zephyr in the spring of 2016.

The music of the ensemble is created by the austere tones of dozens of different flutes and pipes. The consonance of the ensemble is sometimes meditatively floating, swaying and airy, sometimes entrancingly pulsating and swirling. Repetitive rhythms, modal melodies and multiple melodic layers conspire to create new tones and aural fields.

Many of Tuultenpesä’s adaptations have been made collaboratively by the entire ensemble. Improvisation has been instrumental to this process and also plays a key role in concerts. The roots of of the ensemble are strongly embedded in the folk tradition: In Nordic and Baltic-Finnic dance compositions, traditional shepherd songs and folk music. In addition to the traditional songs, the ensemble also plays its members’ own compositions, with many of the songs accompanied by flute.

The ensemble’s concert performances at various festivals in Finland, Sweden and Germany have been true experiences for audiences, who have been touched by the beauty of the music and the kookiness, joy and dedication of the performers. Ääniä Records will release Tuultenpesä’s debut album Vindstilla in the spring of 2022.
