A conferment ceremony is the biggest and most beautiful celebration of the university community and a festive conclusion to university studies, traditionally celebrated over a span of several days. The conferment festivities include, for instance, a conferment concert, the actual conferment ceremony, a procession, a church service or a non-denominational event and a dinner.

One can participate in the ceremony alone or with a companion. The number of seats is limited, and they will be filled in the order of registration.

Memories from the 2018 conferment ceremony

The first joint conferment ceremony of Uniarts Helsinki’s academies was organised for masters and doctors on 8–10 June 2018. The three-day event honoured the academies’ individual traditions, but the goal was also to establish new shared conferment traditions for the university.

Visual artist Elina Saloranta, conferred doctor in the 2018 conferment ceremony:

“The conferment ceremony was a great, once-in-a-lifetime experience. The journey to the festivities was smoothed out by fun dance exercises and the Academy of Fine Arts’ generous gesture of lending us hats to the doctors. The celebration at the Musiikkitalo was a serious and devout community ritual, but without pomp. A sunny picnic crowned the festive week.”

Sofia Suomalainen, alum of the Sibelius Academy and the Theatre Academy, Marshal in the 2018 conferment ceremony:

“The conferment ceremony was a great and valuable occasion, combined with solemnity and relaxation. During the dinner, I got to sit next to composer Kaija Saariaho, which was a really meaningful moment. I met people who graduated from the Uniarts Helsinki at different times, from young graduates to older alumni. It was like a refined class reunion with unforgettable encounters and new friendships.”

Kristiina Ilmonen, Professor of Folk Music at the Sibelius Academy, conferred doctor in the 2018 conferment ceremony:

“The 2018 conferment ceremony was a big, fun, fun and at the same time extremely valuable event that respected academic traditions. The array of festivities created a rare sense of celebration that lifted us collectively above the everyday. The young university’s first promotion also created a new tradition that strengthens the creative spirit of art.”
