Uniarts Helsinki to gradually lift some of the coronavirus-related restrictions

The reopening of on-campus activities will take place in three stages. In May, the currently valid guidelines are in force, which means that most university operations continue remotely. As for the summer (1 June–31 July), on-campus operations will be reopened to a limited extent in accordance with joint principles. The unit-specific instructions are currently being prepared, and they will be published by the end of May. Decisions concerning the autumn term (1 August–) will be made by 19 June.

A summary of the gradual reopening of the university

  • teaching is carried out mainly through remote teaching from 14 May to 31 July 2020
  • the personnel works mainly remotely from 14 May to 31 July 2020
  • studies are carried out mainly through remote learning from 14 May to 31 July 2020
  • studies, teaching and other work that have been given priority based on joint principles will be allowed in the university facilities between 1 June and 31 July 2020
  • when it comes to students’ independent work and practice, the priority is given to activities that contribute to graduation within the year 2020, work that cannot be carried out outside of the university facilities, and work that cannot be delayed until the autumn term.
  • The Uniarts Helsinki Library in Helsinki will be open to a limited extent from 1 to 18 June 2020. The Library will be closed from 19 June to 31 July. The Kuopio Library will be closed until 1 August.
  • Decisions concerning the autumn term (1 August–) will be made by 19 June.

Uniarts Helsinki will gradually lift some of the restrictive measures related to coronavirus. The reopening of campus operations will take place in a controlled manner to eliminate the risk of jeopardising the health and safety of students and personnel. The partial lifting of restrictions will be done with consideration to the policies issued by the Finnish Government, the Regional State Administrative Agency, health officials, Universities Finland UNIFI and other universities. The guidelines will be updated if the pandemic situation changes or if the policies issued by the authorities so require.

The entrance examinations will take place as planned in May 2020. Even though, for the most part, the examination process will be carried out digitally, some of the arrangements do require working in the university facilities.

For the most part, the university facilities will be closed for students until the end of May. Employees may apply for a special authorisation for one day at a time to be able to perform work duties that are critical for the university’s operations. Working in the university facilities is possible for authorised employees on weekdays between 9:00 and 16:00. A more wide-scale reopening of university facilities in May is not possible, because we want to make sure that our entrance examination process goes smoothly, and because we need time to prepare for the safe reopening of facilities in June.

Starting from the beginning of June, the university will partially reopen its facilities for studies, teaching and other work in accordance with joint principles. When it comes to students’ independent work and practice, the priority is given to activities that contribute to graduation within the year 2020, work that cannot be carried out outside of the university facilities, and work that cannot be delayed until the autumn term. The Academy Deans and (as regards the university-level units) the Vice Rectors will make the decisions on who can use the facilities. The health of students and staff and the safe use of the facilities are the main criteria when making the decisions. The academies and other units will compile their own instructions based on joint principles and release them by the end of May.

The Uniarts Helsinki Library in Helsinki will be open to a limited extent from 1 to 18 June 2020. The Library will be closed from 19 June to 31 July 2020, because the Library will introduce new information systems during the summer. The Kuopio Library will be closed until 1 August.

Preliminary guidelines concerning the autumn term (starting on 1 August) will be prepared by 19 June 2020.

To ensure the safe use of the facilities, the university will compile general safety guidelines concerning the use of facilities as well as related unit-level policies. All those who use the facilities must act responsibly and follow the joint instructions. The instructions will be compiled by the end of May.

Joint principles concerning studies, teaching and other work taking place in the university facilities between 1 June and 31 July 2020

  • When it comes to teaching, the priority is given to work that contributes to students’ graduation within the year 2020, work that cannot be carried out outside of the university facilities, and work that cannot be delayed until the autumn term. This work may entail teaching and guidance related to students’ thesis projects.
  • When it comes to students’ independent work, starting from 1 June 2020, the priority is given to activities that contribute to graduation within the year 2020, work that cannot be carried out outside of the university facilities, and work that cannot be delayed until the autumn term. For example, these activities may include
    • practising with an instrument for proficiency demonstrations at the Sibelius Academy, if practising outside of the university facilities is not possible
    • artistic work of Academy of Fine Arts students in studios
    • independent practice of Theatre Academy students.
  • As for research activities, the priority is given to work that cannot be carried out outside of the university facilities and work that cannot be delayed until the autumn term.
  • When it comes to preparations for artistic activities taking place in the autumn, the priority is given to work that contributes to students’ graduation within the year 2020, work that cannot be carried out outside of the university facilities, and work that cannot be delayed until the autumn term.
  • As for work that is not related to teaching, the priority is given to activities that are critical in terms of the continuity of the university’s operations or that support students’ graduation within the year 2020.
