360 Degrees – Focus on Lighting Design by Uniarts Helsinki’s Theatre Academy covers the history of lighting design and its instruction in Finland. It also explores visual perception, conceptions of transparency, the relationship between designer and technology, as well as the professional identity of lighting designers. The editors are designers & teachers Tomi Humalisto, Kimmo Karjunen & Raisa Kilpeläinen from the Academy’s Degree Programme in Lighting Design.
In his doctoral degree, Alejandro Olarte has produced a pedagogical toolkit for studying and teaching electroacoustic music performance and improvisation. In his thesis Elements of Electroacoustic Music Improvisation and Performance – A Pedagogical Toolkit Olarte has investigated fundamental elements of electroacoustic music, sound theory and its performance aspects through improvisational strategies. Olartes dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Music will take place at the Sibelius Academy, Uniarts Helsinki on May 11th.
How could we create hope in seemingly hopeless situations?
Could we improve children’s learning and wellbeing at school by increasing access to arts activities? Do elderly people living in institutions have the right and the opportunity to play instruments and sing? Can prison theatre help lower reoffending rates?

The desert is my teacher: new works from arid land
This interdisciplinary workshop led by the ATOM-r collective will engage movement, text, and technology through the contemporary paradigm of mixed reality in which physical and virtual spaces are intertwined. Participants will construct a ritual performance working with a gestural and movement vocabulary that activates the sensors of their smartphones to generate texts, images and audio.
Finland has one of the best education systems in the world. If schools wished to reach a new level of excellence, they should strengthen the integration of arts and culture in the teaching of all subjects, researchers now say.
It was with tremendous sadness that we learnt that Doran George, dancer, choreographer and scholar, died in Los Angeles in late November. Doran had been a visiting artist to the programme, teaching one of the first workshops in the programme in during the autumn semester of 2016.
The books title Inside and Beside the Camp refers to German barracks on the Tulliniemi peninsula in Hanko, Finland. The peninsula was the point of arrival for German troops who began their transit through Finland from 1942 to 1944. The area closed after World War II, but it attracted public attention in 2014 when the City of Hanko opened a nature trail there, and partly forgotten German barracks from the transit camp were discovered next to the trail.
