Birds have held a special position in the mythologies of Finno-Ugric peoples, and bird myths share similarities from Finland all the way to the Ural Mountains. Myths tells us that the world was born from a bird’s egg and that birds acted as messengers in the human life cycle. Folk poetry often equates women with birds, and in Karelian and Finnish rune-singing, a bird was the first to be involved in brewing beer. It was believed that at the end of a human’s life, their soul would become a “soul bird” and fly into a different state of being.

Finnish-Ugric peoples share a common linguistic relationship. These languages are spoken by approximately 23 million people worldwide. Some of the languages are already extinct or critically endangered.

This concert will feature folk songs from Karelia, Finland, Ingria, Mordovia, Udmurtia, Estonia and Setomaa, among other regions. Some of the songs will be performed in a traditional style of singing, but the concert will also feature adaptations and composed pieces as well as improvisation.
