At Uniarts Helsinki, you can complete a doctoral degree in fine arts, music, theatre, or dance. Admissions to doctoral programmes are academy and programme specific. 

Doctoral Studies at the Academy of Fine Arts

Uniarts Helsinki’s Academy of Fine Arts Doctoral Studies Programme admits students through an open application procedure.

The next application period will be in the fall 2018. 

The Doctoral Studies Programme admitted  5 new doctoral students to commence studies in the autumn term of 2017 in order to complete a Doctor of Fine Arts degree. The degree requires 240 ECTS credits. The last application period started 1 September and ended on 14 October 2016.

Doctoral Studies at the Sibelius Academy

Doctoral education at the Sibelius Academy takes place in two doctoral schools: DocMus Doctoral School of Classical Music and MuTri Doctoral School of Music Education, Jazz, and Folk Music. To enrol in the actual doctoral programme, students are required to submit an application for the right of study and a doctoral study plan for approval by  the Academic Council.

To enrol as a preparatory external student, applicants of Doctoral School of music education, jazz and folk music must use the form which can be downloaded here. This means the applicants who are in the field of music education, jazz music, folk music, music technology or arts management. Applications for enrolment as a preparatory external student are accepted throughout the year.

As a preparatory student, the applicant will be expected to prepare a doctoral study plan and attend the preliminary courses organized by the DocMus Department. Preparatory students are required to complete courses worth a minimum of six ECTS credits.

 

Preparatory students may attend doctoral seminars and lectures at the Sibelius Academy, where they may receive guidance in drawing up their doctoral study plan.

 

Students are strongly advised to complete the Preliminary Course for the Planning of Studies. Other recommended courses include Doctoral Degree as a Project, Introduction to Scientific Philosophy, Research Methods and Methodology, and Writing Skills.

 

Students may also apply to attend additional courses (the study right is granted by the department head).

 

Where applicable, credits from courses taken as a preparatory student may be counted towards the doctoral degree.
