Pilar Miralles – Esparto, embodied

Second artistic part of Pilar Miralles’ doctoral research

Bring your knitting set, your drawing notebook, your watercolours, your half-sown sock, or your origami paper. Come and spend some time in the hall handcrafting with Pilar Miralles and others, yet in your own space. Other sounds and images will accompany us in this space where we listen through the hands, we remember through the hands, we wonder how we can access the world through the hands.

“Esparto, embodied” is the second of a series of three installations in which Miralles invites the audience to participate in her process of memory retrieval and resignification of esparto grass. Esparto grass is a vegetal fiber used for a disappearing crafting tradition in Miralles’ homeland in Southeastern Spain. Through this process, she wonders how remembering through artistic practice can contribute to regaining a deeper awareness of the time and place we inhabit, despite our embeddedness in a fast-changing world.

This installation will be free of charge, but it will require registration so that we can all comfortably fit in the hall. The registration form will be published at least one month before the event.

You are welcome to join even if you don’t know any craft. There is always something we can do with our hands. Basic materials will be provided if needed.

This event was kindly supported by Arts Promotion Centre Finland and The Society of Finnish Composers.
