Lecture by pianist-composer Jed Distler: Comparative Listening
American pianist, composer and music journalist Jed Distler will lecture on historical piano recordings.
Lecture is in English.
Through comparative listening, one has a first hand opportunity to study the evolution of piano performance practice from the 19th to the 21st centuries, and to explore the extraordinary wealth of interpretive styles and traditions preserved in sound.
Highlights include hearing recordings of Grieg and Gershwin at the piano alongside modern interpretations, a discussion of old and new approaches to Chopin playing, and also comparing the same pianists playing the same work at different times in their careers.
