Camille Claudel: Into the Fire
Camille Claudel: Into the Fire brings to life the inner world of one of history’s most brilliant and overlooked artists. Written for mezzo-soprano and string quartet, the haunting cycle by American composer Jake Heggie unfolds over the final day before the French sculptor’s confinement to an asylum.
As Claudel awakens, she sings to six of her most iconic sculptures, each one unlocking memories of passion, betrayal, and artistic obsession. With text drawn from her journals, the work gives voice to Claudel as she confronts her turbulent relationship with Auguste Rodin, her artistic identity, and the cost of creation.
Directed by Sakari Topi, this performance marks the Finnish premiere of the work.
