Choreography, master

Develop your artistic voice and articulate your research to be able to contribute to society and work as an artist of the future.

Why study here?

The Master’s Programme in Choreography consists of two years of full-time studies that will help you develop your artistic skills and knowledge. You will grow your critical awareness and understanding of contemporary choreography practices and strategies, and the interactive relationship between art and society.

Content and objective of the programme

The choreography programme leads to a Master of Arts (Dance) and consists of two years of full-time studies. The programme (120 cr) includes studies on choreography and personal artistic projects, contextual studies, optional studies and an MA thesis. Our focus is on current approaches and methodological questions in choreography and performance, discourses on society and art, as well as on the work environment of an artist. Your own artistic projects play an important role, as well as collaborations with students from other degree programmes.

While we emphasise a historically conscious take on choreography, we simultaneously encourage a critical, open, and research-based approach. You will work in a collective learning environment that supports artistic development, dialogue and collaboration, while integrating practical and theoretical issues of contemporary choreography and performance into artistic processes.

Collaborations

We collaborate with other degree programmes of Uniarts Helsinki as well as with the Performing Arts Research Centre (Tutke). We also have an active relationship with arts professionals: we welcome visiting artists and organise mentoring for students.

International mobility

The work of contemporary choreographers is international. We are actively involved in international partnerships and educational cooperation. As a student you may take part in European dance events and visit other art education institutions. Each year, we receive guest teachers and artists that are influential in the international field of dance and performing arts.

Artistic projects

Our programme offers students good opportunities for artistic activities using the Academy’s performance facilities and services.

The curriculum includes individual artistic projects and performances, as well as open demonstrations. Their aim is to support the student to develop a personal artistic voice and offer an opportunity to explore the aesthetic potentialities of choreography and artistic collaboration.
