Manuaali is a kinetic audiobook on the world beyond techno-optimism. The work combines literary narration, graphic notation and algorithmic processing into an experimental performance form that deconstructs the underlying biases of commercial audiobook formate. A research performance based on the interaction of one performer and sound technology brings the unpredictable materiality of the recorded human voice to view and examines it from the perspective of translatability and meaning formation.

Manuaali forms the first artistic component of Klaus Maunuksela’s doctoral research project in the Performing Arts Research Center in Theatre Academy, Uniarts Helsinki. Previous variants of the work have been performed in Platform Gatt, Reykjavik (2021) and in Magito, Helsinki (2022). virate.me is a live art syndicate specialized in the production of sound, text and visuals.
