Ojajärvi Blom Ojajärvi

The music of the trio Ojajärvi Blom Ojajärvi combines the enchanting sound of the overtone flute, pulsing rhythm of the beatbox and folk rock influences.

The trio’s music stems from the fascinating vibrant tones of overtone flutes and the stream of consciousness they inspire. Traditional melodies and new pieces composed for the overtone flute adapt to an enchanting dance of the natural tone scale. The ensemble is intent on shaking the dust off the overtone flute, an ancient Finnish instrument. The trio’s sound combines ancient melodics based on the natural tone scale of the overtone flute, cittern riffs with folk rock influences and the pulsing rhythms of the beatbox. The OBO trio’s repertoire consists of both Scandinavian and Baltic traditional melodies and Janne Ojajärvi’s compositions.

Performers

Janne Ojajärvi, overtone flutes, bass overtone flutes, vocals
Venla Blom, beatbox, vocals
Joonas Ojajärvi, cittern, vocals

The ensemble was established as Janne Ojajärvi asked himself why the Finnish overtone flute is so little used by Finnish bands. This waste of the overtone flute’s great potential had to stop, and soon the OBO trio came together. In addition to adaptations of traditional music, the group’s repertoire also includes pieces specifically composed for the overtone flute, which is a rare treat both in Finland and elsewhere in the world. The trio published its first album in September 2020.
