Helga Karen — The Pianist Who Is in Control
Helga Karen’s second doctoral concert
In her second doctoral concert, Helga Karen examines the role of a pianist as an attentive rhythmic actor, technical agent and master of theatrical music material.
What does “control” mean in contemporary music? Is the pianist controlling the piano or is the piano controlling the pianist? From fingertips to page-length phrases – everything involves control, command of things and concentration. This concert takes you to mirrored worlds and examines the command of material in miniatures and in a half-hour music theatre piece.
