Studia Generalia 2022 explores art at the crossroads of ethics and politics

Welcome to the first open lecture series of the Sörnäinen campus!

Is it possible to decouple art from ethical and political issues? The first Studia Generalia of the of the University of the Arts’ Sörnäinen Campus discusses ethical challenges of the art field.

The lecture series, Art at the Crossroads of Ethical Questions, asks whose stories we tell when we make, teach and research art.

Topics of discussion include the boundary between sensitivity and self-censorship, dealing with challenging works of the past and resisting violence through art. The lectures offer an opportunity to reflect on how art debates have changed from the past until today. The focus is also on the future of the academies — How can we regenerate and evolve our practices in an ethically sustainable way?

The idea to realize the series originated from a collaboration between Jukka von Boehm, University Lecturer at Uniarts Helsinki’s Theatre Academy, and Anita Seppä, Professor at Uniarts Helsinki’s Research hub. They hope for the lectures to reach a wide audience of people interested in the research, art and teaching at the University of the Arts.

“The encounters made possible by the series offer an opportunity to shake up familiar topics and practices,” von Boehm and Seppä say. “Furthermore, we want to open up the work of the artists, teachers and researchers working at the University of the Arts to the public.”

The lecture series takes place on Wednesdays from 18:00 to 20:00, from 7 September to 16 November 2022 on the Sörnäinen campus. The series contains 10 lectures in total. Some of the lectures are in English and some in Finnish.

You are warmly welcome to join the discussion!

All lectures of the Studia Generalia are open to the public. The University of the Arts also aims to provide videos material of the lectures whenever possible.
