War-ning Art: Resilience, Response, and Artistic Knowledge in Finland

The mini-seminar explores creative responses to war, displacement, and global crises. It brings together artists, researchers, and cultural professionals to share insights, foster collaboration, and imagine future projects.

This interdisciplinary mini-seminar explores the role of the arts in times of war and polycrisis, the professional resilience of displaced artists, and the themes they address through their art. Bringing together artists, cultural producers, curators, educators, policymakers and researchers, the event provides a platform for sharing perspectives on ”warning art” and building joint visions for cross-sectoral collaboration and care.

”War-ning art” is considered both a distinct artistic discipline and a curatorial and cultural agenda that addresses global crises, violence, displacement and war. This agenda is oriented towards societal impact, collective reflection and healing through artistic knowledge.

This event has been initiated by the participatory action research project ’Ukrainian Artists in Finland’ (University of Turku, supported by the Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters) and is being delivered in collaboration with partners from academia, the arts and cultural institutions across Finland.

The programme brings together:

  • research findings
  • statements by Ukrainian and international artists
  • viewpoints from the Helsinki International Artist Programme (HIAP), Arts Promotion Centre Finland (Taike), University of Turku, University of the Arts Helsinki (Research Institute), and others stakeholders across arts, culture, and academia
  • plans for future cooperation and projects.
