Kansanmusiikkia Taideyliopistosta: Lauman soitto

Lauma Berza’s master’s concert.

Reinis Aristovs

Carrying every moment of the past within her, Lauma Berza explores musical traditions that continue to resonate in the present. Through studies in the Nordic Master of Folk Music programme, she has immersed herself in the herding music traditions of Scandinavia, Finland and the Baltic region.

This wider cultural area once shared far more than it does today: a musical world that existed before major and minor tonality, when buckhorns and birch trumpets shaped the laws of music.

Herding cultures occupied a unique position between the domestic and the wild. While communities depended on domesticated animals, shepherds themselves spent much of their lives outdoors, exposed to nature and its forces. This vulnerability fostered powerful forms of emotional expression and communication, where music served as a means to connect with and influence both animals and surroundings.

The vocal and instrumental practices of shepherd traditions have become a central source of inspiration in Berza’s artistic work. Over the past three years, she has developed her modal musical language through the study of Nordic herding traditions while rediscovering related elements within Latvian musical heritage.

The concert features violin, voice, stompbox and a self-built analogue synthesizer, providing opportunities to explore the inner qualities and textures of sound in detail. The programme consists of dances, songs and improvisations composed and arranged by Berza, while also reflecting the musical influences that shaped her artistic identity growing up in the 1990s.
