Global Fest: Karakatum
Karaka-Tum – Let’s go Rhythm!!
Karaka-Tum is a percussion ensemble that forms part of a course offered by the Global Music programme at Sibelius Academy, Uniarts. The ensemble explores rhythm and how people can engage with it through body percussion, vocal percussion, and a variety of percussion instruments from around the world.
In this performance, we will present a piece inspired by the famous Samba rhythm, a key element of Brazil’s carnival celebrations. Rhythm is a powerful tool for creativity and expression, and we aim to showcase both short compositions and the creative process behind them—how the rhythms and ideas were developed and how they were adapted to different instruments.
The performance will have an interactive element, inviting the audience to join in and be part of the experience, playing and singing together in a grand finale.
Karaka-Tum! TumTumTum!!!
Changes are possible.

Bringing together artists from many corners of the world, the Global Music Department focusses on intercultural dialogue and collaboration, creating new artistic work together, and fostering a sense of global artistic citizenship. Expect a feast of dynamic, innovative, inspiring concerts and pop-up events, featuring performers from around the world celebrating the diversity of our planet.
This year’s festival also includes a special symposium supported by the Pacius fund, within the Society of Swedish Literature in Finland. The theme of this year’s symposium is (Re)imagining diversity and difference as core strengths of a thriving cultural field in Finland. A special Pacius fund prize will be announced and awarded as part of the symposium.
