Chamber Ecotone is the first artistic component of Esther Calderón’s doctoral research project, “Composition as an Ecosystemic Practice: Exploring Interdependent Systems in Contemporary Electroacoustic Music Concerts.”

An ecotone is a place where different ecosystems meet and exist in tension. In Chamber Ecotone, this notion is translated into a domestic setting: a room shared by humans and houseplants. What kinds of relationships develop through sharing space with the more-than-human? What forms of attention, care, dependency, or agency emerge there?

Inspired by the spaces, interactions, and emotions that arise when living with plants, Chamber Ecotone reimagines this private experience as a musical environment. The concert brings together flute, saxophone, viola, cello, live electronics, plants, and sound spatialization. Musicians, plants, technologies, audience members, and the environment coexist within interconnected ecosystems, influencing one another in different ways.

Functioning as a laboratory for ecosystemic composition, the project explores composition as a relational and situated practice. Rather than treating composition as a fixed object, it approaches it as something that takes shape through the relationships and interactions that emerge during performance. Through Chamber Ecotone, Esther investigates what constitutes ecosystemic composition as a framework for contemporary electroacoustic music, exploring how relationships are established and transformed, and how different forms of agency emerge and interact within performance situations.

The research and concert are funded by the Finnish Cultural Foundation.

Changes are possible.
