Schubert, Schubert, Schubert
The event will feature all of Schubert’s works for violin and piano, and lecture ”Beyond Schubert”.
Lecture – Beyond Schubert
Swedish concert pianist Peter Friis Johansson presents his PhD project Beyond Schubert in which he conducts experiments on unfinished and finished works by Franz Schubert. The lecture will offer a behind the scenes glimpse of Johansson´s artistic process, and how that process challenges the established approach to classical music and performances. By questioning the expected responsibilities of the composer and the performer, a new artistic role of co-creator is explored which takes on the task of both composing and performing. Peter’s completions of the unfinished piano sonatas are created with modularity in mind and requires any performer to assemble his/her own version of the completion. Thus, the open-ended quality of the fragments is preserved throughout the project.
Concert
Cecilia Zilliacus and Peter Friis Johansson engage in an all Schubert recital with a twist! The program frames two of Schubert’s most luminous works for violin and piano, the C-major fantasy D. 934 and the Grand Duo D. 574, with original preludes partly composed and partly improvised by the performers, creating a musical narrative that blurs the boundary between old and new.
Before the intermission, Johansson performs one of his completions of Schubert’s unfinished Piano Sonata in f-minor, D. 625. While rooted in the musical language of Schubert, Peter’s completions still introduce ideas that clearly do not exist in the original fragments, challenging the concept of the original composer as the sole author of a work.
The concert thereby celebrates Schubert and his masterworks, while still creating an unexpected dialogue between historical works and contemporary performance, as the artists reinterpret, complete, and comment on Schubert’s original works.
