Jenna Ristilä – Woman and Sonata
Jenna Ristilä’s second doctoral concert presents sonatas by female composers from three centuries.

Heidi Sundblad-Halme’s cello sonata will be heard for the first time in decades – its sheet music was only recently found in a warehouse!
Due to lack of training and time and the disapproval of the patriarchy, the sonata form – the crown jewel of absolute music – has often not been a part of the repertoire of many historical female composers – but this was not the case for all. Have these women consciously opposed the conventions of their time? Have they been a little difficult, stubborn, women against the mainstream? (I.e. feminists?!) Can you hear signs of such opposition in their compositions?
Programme
- Laura Netzel (1839-1927): Piano sonata Op. 27 (1893)
- Heidi Sundblad-Halme (1903-1973): Sonata for cello and piano Op. 14/23 (1933-1938)
- Jovanka Trbojević (1963-2017): Piano sonata (2001-2002)
Performers
- Iiris Tötterström, cello
- Jenna Ristilä, piano
