Global Spring: Oscar Beerten

Channeled through Ecstatic States.

Channeled through Ecstatic States concert presents a musical portrait, drawn from a unique navigation through traditional music.

There is a phenomenon called Rammeslått in the traditional repertoire of Norwegian fiddle music. The term conveys a sensation of trance or hypnosis through music and dance. This common – and yet poorly described – sensation of eternal ecstasy can also be experienced in relation to other musical traditions worldwide.

With this concert, Belgian multi-instrumentalist Oscar Beerten draws deeply on Nordic folk music, channeling impressions of music rooted in continuousness and trance. This is achieved through story-telling with traditional bowed-instruments such as the Norwegian hardanger fiddle. After seven years of travels and studies in the Nordic countries and beyond, Oscar set sail for Finland in 2020, building and fine-tuning a creative framework for meaningful musical dialogue with the unknown. During the many years up north, Oscar has immersed himself in numerous Scandinavian and northern regional music styles. His compositions therefore also touch upon diverse influences from Scandinavian folk music, with an innovative personal interpretation. The culmination of Oscar’s Master’s dissertation, Channeled through Ecstatic States brings together these musical experiences and influences alongside his academic research.

Pulled from traditional repertoire as well as featuring self-written compositions, Beerten attempts to make folk music sound and feel like a natural part of our modern age. Channeled through Ecstatic States also carries echoes of the Sahel region, traces from Central Europe, and eternal Norwegian dance music.
