Emil Holmström: Busoni, Beethoven and the art of fugue

Emil Holmström’s fifth postgraduate concert is a ticket to the depths of two cult classic fugues.

The concert offers two cult classic fugues: The finale of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Hammerklavier sonata and Ferruccio Buson’s Fantasia Contrappuntistica. In both pieces, the composers force the piano to the limits of its means of expression by trying to combine an abstract counterpoint and a musically effective format. Both attempts have something that is compelling in a fascinating way, and at their best, they offer the listener a view in the depths of a Faustian mind.
