Alumni club: Is Finland closing its windows from the world?

The Theatre Academy Alumni Association will organise the first club evening of autumn 2023 with the focus on a topical theme that has a profound impact on the Finnish artistic sector and arts education.

What kind of society will await our graduating artists, the future citizens of the world?  We ask what happens if Finland’s foreign and immigration policy is discriminatory and starts to exclude students or experts, researchers and artists from outside the EU on financial grounds due to income criteria. Will Finland lose its competitive edge in the international recruitment market? Can Finnish racism be silenced and what is the humanistic vision of our society in general? How can foreign students (about 7% in total) at different educational institutions complete their studies if they have to pay full tuition fees?  It would be particularly important to talk about the current situation, with Finnish art schools and a large number of schools and higher education institutions protesting against the cuts planned by the Government.

Panelists in the discussion:

  • Sixten Korkman, economist
  • Gita Kadambi, general director of the
    Finnish National Opera and Ballet
  • Jussi Sorjanen, future director of & Espoo Theatre.

The event will be opened by Ville Sandqvist, a member of the board of the Theatre Academy Alumni Association and vice dean in charge of teaching at the Theatre Academy, and moderated by Kirsikka Moring, a member of the board of the association.

The event is in Finnish, but English interpretation will be available via Zoom
