Academy Winds: Tre concerti

The Academy Winds ensemble of the Sibelius Academy at Uniarts Helsinki performs

During their concert, the Academy Winds ensemble of the Sibelius Academy will perform no fewer than three concertos conducted by Petri Komulainen, who is a lecturer in wind conducting.

As an overture, the ensemble will perform Rautavaara’s Concerto grottesco. It has been quite a while since the piece was last performed: during this concert, it will be heard for the first time since its premiere!

Florent Schmitt’s Dionysiaques is a short piece that has been described as a virtuosic showpiece for a large wind orchestra. It will be followed by the climax of the first half of the concert: the Concerto for Cello and Wind Orchestra by Austrian composer Friedrich Gulda.

The talented Lithuanian cellist August Gocentas, who will be graduating from the Sibelius Academy soon, has been selected as the soloist. Gulda’s concerto is brimming with rebellious spirit, humor and jazzy vibes. Bartók’s magnificent Concerto for Orchestra, adapted for a wind orchestra, will be performed after the intermission.

Academy Winds

The Academy Winds ensemble of the Sibelius Academy at Uniarts Helsinki performs periodically. It has existed in its current form since 2012, when lecturer in wind conducting Peter Ettrup Larsen established the ensemble. Academy Winds includes the separate brass and woodwind ensembles Academy Brass and Academy Woodwinds.

The performers are selected from among orchestral instrument students for rehearsal periods which last 4–6 days and culminate in a public concert. The work schedule mimics those of professional orchestras. Academy Winds is coordinated by Petri Komulainen, lecturer in wind conducting.
