What happens when arts and technology meet? How do creativity and technology fit together? The Centre for Music and Technology (MuTe) at the Sibelius Academy, Uniarts Helsinki organises an annual festival to shed light on the matter and showcase MuTe’s creative work.

MuTeFest offers a unique opportunity to experience pieces and projects from a world where art and technology intertwine. MuTe students collaborate with their Uniarts colleagues, peers from Aalto University and with established artists to produce fascinating and unexpected results.

MuTeFest’s daring and varied programme consists of many exceptional concerts and events. Join us for an open discussion on Music Technology and Gender, experience Sonic Walks around Töölönlahti, enjoy the synthesiser orchestra Synthestra featuring Jimi Tenor and Lau Nau, and dance to experimental music at the Music to Dance club night. Discover the Floppyphonium by Marko Timlin in a performance for a sound sculpture consisting of 104 floppy disk drives, and Fiction and Music, a co-creation by student composers and scriptwriters.

“The successive editions of MuTeFest represent the plurality of the teaching at MuTe allowing students with a great variety of backgrounds to shape their own profiles, skills and expertise”, Marianne Decoster-Taivalkoski, Head of the department says.

“Building on our vast experience of making music with technologies in general, we want to highlight how digitalisation (that is computing the world) simultaneously restricts, broadens and shapes artistic creative processes. The attitude of a music technologist towards digitalisation must be curious, explorative and a critical one. Our role is also to challenge and develop technologies. MuTeFest is an encounter with musical innovations.”
