Student ambassador Cliodhna Scott: From day one we went straight into making music together

Flutist Cliodhna Scott knew she wanted to become a professional musician at age 9. At 18, knowing nothing about Finland, she left her home in Scotland to study at the Sibelius Academy of Uniarts Helsinki. As a student ambassador, she now helps applicants with their questions about student life in Helsinki.

I wanted to study abroad and my teacher encouraged me to apply to the Sibelius Academy. I was unsure; I thought it’s too far away from home. But then I made a connection with a teacher at the academy who was kind enough to give me a free consultation lesson on Zoom. After our two-hour session I knew this was the place for me.

Students come here from all over the world. I never imagined I would have such a diverse group of friends. The atmosphere is relaxed and non-competitive. From day one we went straight into making music together. I feel comfortable playing in front of my classmates because there’s no fear of judgement.

I get an hour and a half of teaching time every week. The faculty is kind and supportive. They’re making you love music and this way become a good player. I like to have a teacher who both pushes me and nurtures my progression – technically and musically. He supports my goals and backs me to believe in myself.

The practice rooms in our three buildings are brilliant. We have lots of opportunities for orchestral projects and apprentice positions with professional orchestras, including full mock auditions. In our facilities at the Helsinki Music Centre, we are connected to the best concert halls of the city and get to go to concerts for free.

My first year here, it’s been big and busy. I have grown as a musician and as a person. I’ve got involved in the Sibelius Academy’s classical music instrument student organisation. With practice I’ve learned to create my own schedule and found a way of living that works for me. Most importantly, I have been given the time and space to learn about myself.

What made you seek out to be a student ambassador?

Working as a student ambassador suits me well because I’m outgoing and I like talking to people. It’s really fun to be part of the ambassador group as we get on really well and have become close to each other in just a few months’ time.

What is it like to be an international student here, not speaking the language? Who will you have as your teacher? What kind of paperwork is needed?  I’m happy to answer questions about student life at the Sibelius Academy, in Helsinki and Finland as a country. I know from experience that applicants may need help in building confidence about the decision to move abroad.

Student ambassadors from all three academies of Uniarts Helsinki are happy to answer any questions regarding studying and student life – or give you a campus tour.
