Sibafest: Improvisointia lyömäsoittimilla -työpaja
Lämpimästi tervetuloa Sibelius-Akatemian lyömäsoitinluokan osallistavaan improvisaatioesitykseen!
Esitys keskittyy muusikoiden improvisoituihin, hetkessä luotuihin äänimaisemiin, joiden inspiraationa toimivat heidän itsensä kuvaamat videot. Yleisö voi aktiivisesti vaikuttaa omaan esityskokemukseensa liikkumalla vapaasti ympäri esitystilaa esityksen aikana sekä osallistumalla halutessaan esitykseen. Tuloksena on yhteinen tutkimusmatka siihen, miten ääni, mielikuvitus ja kuva voivat sulautua yhdeksi teokseksi.
Esityksen teemana toimii kotoisuus ja sen kaipuu. Videoiden kuvaajat nähdään matkaamassa koteihinsa ja muihin kotoisiin paikkoihin, kävellen sekä erinäisten kulkuvälineiden avustuksella. Muusikoiden itse valitsemat lyömäsoittimet käsittävät heille merkityksellisiä soittimia ja äänivärejä, joiden äärellä he tuntevat olevansa kuin kotonaan.
Myös yleisöä toivotaan olemaan kuin kotonaan – esityksen aikana saat vapaasti liikkua ympäri tilaa ja esiintyjiä ja vaikuttaa siihen, mitä milläkin hetkellä kuulet ja näet. Liikkeestä syntyvää ääntä (kuten vaatteiden kahinaa tai askelten kopinaa) ei tarvitse pelätä.
Ohjeita yleisölle
Haluamme antaa mahdollisimman monelle yleisön jäsenelle mahdollisuuden osallistua halutessaan esitykseen ja saada tuntumaa äänitaiteeseen, lyömäsoitinten soittamiseen sekä improvisaatioon, matalalla kynnyksellä. Mikäli sinua kiinnostaa, alla muutamia ohjeita.
1) Minkäänlaista aiempaa kokemusta musiikin tai esittävien taiteiden parissa ei vaadita. Tärkeintä on, että tuot mukanasi avoimen mielen (: Esityksen aikana sekä muusikot että yleisö ovat “parrasvalojen alla” lavalla, joten siinä suhteessa esiintymistä ei tarvitse jännittää.
2) Esityksessä on kaksi osaa: alustus sekä itse esitys. Aloitamme iltapäivän muusikoiden videon kanssa esittämällä, kahden minuutin kestoisella alustuksella, joka toimii esimerkkinä ja inspiraationa osallistumisesta kiinnostuneille. Koko esityksen tarkoitus on tulkita videon tapahtumia musiikillisesti. Voitkin keskittyä esimerkiksi siihen, miten videon tunnelman tai “kohtauksen” vaihto heijastuu musiikissa. Myös yksityiskohdat voivat olla mielenkiintoisia: minkälaista ääntä liukuovi pitää, minkälaisen rytmin katulamppujen heijastus voi luoda?
3) Itse esitys kestää yhteensä noin puoli tuntia. Se koostuu neljästä varsinaisesta, 4-6min:n kestoisesta osasta, joiden tunnelma on vuodenaikaan sopien luminen, talvinen ja/tai pimeä. Näistä kolmea ensimmäistä seuraa coda (loppukaneetti), joissa Välimeren aurinko toimii kontrastina pimeydelle. Mikäli haluat mukaan soittamaan, pyydämme ilmaisemaan kiinnostuksesi menemällä seisomaan haluamasi soittajan viereen joko esityksen alustuksen, tai jonkun kolmesta codasta, aikana. Tämä on merkki soittajalle, joka edellisen osan loppuessa antaa sinulle lyhyen ohjeistuksen soittimista, jotka ovat käytettävissäsi. Tämän jälkeen alkaa seuraava osa, jonka mukana saat soittaa – voit koittaa imitoida vieressäsi olevaa soittajaa, tai soittaa jotain muuta, mikä mielestäsi sopii videoon tai musiikilliseen tunnelmaan. Kun video vaihtuu codaan (pimeydestä / lumesta aurinkoiseen autoajeluun), pyydämme sinua jättämään kapulat ja soittimet soittajan luo ja palaamaan takaisin yleisöön. Näin otat esiintyjät huomioon sekä annat vuoron seuraavalle osallistujalle.
HUOM: Vältetään ruuhkaa: mikäli huomaat, että yhden esiintyjän luona on jo ihminen jonossa, valitse toinen soittaja tai odota seuraavaan osaan asti.
4) Yritämme parhaamme mukaan mahdollistaa osallistumisen kaikille halukkaille. Mikäli lyömäsoitinten soittaminen kuitenkin jännittää liikaa tai halukkaita osallistujia on liian monta, videon keskivaiheilla (osan ll lopussa) on lyhyt kohtaus, jossa kuvaaja istuu Välimeren rannalla, aaltojen kohinaa ja leudon tuulen puhallusta kuunnellen. Tätä kohtausta varten pyydämme jokaista yleisössä olevaa uskalikkoa osallistumaan tuulen ja meren äänen tuottamiseen omalta paikaltaan käsin. Voit puhaltaa ilmaa ulos suustasi, hieroa takkisi hihoja toisiinsa, tai keksiä muun vastaavan, luovan tavan osallistua yhteisen äänimaiseman rakentamiseen.
*Merenrantakohtaus kestää yhteensä vain noin puoli minuuttia. Mikäli haluat osallistua siihen, valmistaudu viimeistään videon ll osan kohdalla nähdessäsi junan ikkunanäkymän vaihtuvan aurinkoiseen, eteläiseen autoajeluun, sillä merenrantakohtaus alkaa reilun minuutin päästä! Itse kohtaus on ohi, kun video pimenee – tässä kohtaa voi myös lopettaa suhistamisen ja puuskuttelun ynnä muun.
5) Jos olet liikkeellä pienen lapsen kanssa, pyydämme sinua toimimaan saattajana, mikäli haluatte osallistua musisointiin.

A warm welcome to a participatory improvisation performance by the Sibelius Academy percussion department!
The performance focuses on improvised soundscapes, created by the musicians in the moment and inspired by self-filmed videos. The audience can actively influence their own experience by moving freely around the performance space and participating in the performance if they so wish. The result is a joint exploration on how sound, imagination, and image can merge together in a unity.
The theme of the performance is home and the longing for it. The narrators of the video are seen traveling to their homes and other familiar places, by feet and various means of transportation. The percussion instruments, personally chosen by the musicians, feature instruments and sound colors that feel meaningful and homely to them.
We also wish for the audience to feel at home. During the performance, you are free to move around the space and the performers, personally influencing what you hear and see at any given moment. There is no need to worry about the sounds created by movement (such as the rustling of clothes or the sound of footsteps).
Instructions for the audience
We want to provide the opportunity to participate in the performance to all interested audience members, to get a feel for sound art, percussion and improvisation, with a low participation threshold. If you are interested, find instructions below.
1) No previous experience in music or the performing arts is required. The most important thing to bring with you is an open mind (: During the performance, both the musicians and the audience are ”in the spotlight” – on stage – so there is no need to be nervous.
2) The event consists of two parts: a demonstration and the actual performance. We will begin the afternoon with a short music & video introduction that will serve as an example and inspiration for those interested in participating. The purpose of the entire performance is to musically interpret the events seen in the video. You can focus, for example, on how the video’s mood or current scene can be interpreted through music. Details can also be interesting: what kind of sound does a sliding door make, what kind of rhythm can the reflection of street lamps create?
3) The actual performance lasts for half an hour. It consists of four main parts lasting 4-6 minutes each, with a snowy, wintery and/or dark atmosphere appropriate for the season. The first three parts are followed by a coda (a finale or conclusion), in which the Mediterranean sun is brought in as contrast with the darkness. If you would like to play along, please indicate your interest by standing next to the musician you would like to play with, during the demonstration or one of the three codas. This is a signal to the musician who, at the end of the current section, will give you brief instructions of the instruments available to you. After this, the next part begins, and you can now play along. You can try to imitate the musician next to you, or play something completely different that you think fits the video or the current musical mood. When the video changes to a coda (from darkness/snow to a sunny car ride), we ask you to leave the sticks and instruments with the musician and return to the audience. This is to show consideration for the artists and give space for the next participant.
NOTE: If you notice that there is already someone waiting in line for a particular performer, choose another musician or wait until the next part.
4) We will do our best to make it possible for everyone to participate. However, if playing feels too nerve-wracking or there are too many participants, there is a short scene in the middle of the video (at the end of part II) where the video narrator sits on the Mediterranean coast, listening to the sound of the waves and the gentle blowing of the wind. For this scene, we ask everyone in the audience to participate by imitating the sound of the wind and the sea. You can blow air out of your mouth, rub your jacket sleeves together, or come up with another creative way to participate in creating a shared soundscape.
*The seaside scene only lasts for about half a minute. If you want to participate, start to prepare when you see the train window view change to a sunny, Mediterranean scene in part II of the video, as the seaside scene begins in just over a minute! The scene itself is over when the video fades to black – at this point, you can also stop making noise.
5) If you have brought a small child with you, we ask that you act as their escort in case they wish to participate in the music-making.
