Instrument workshop

We organise courses related to instrument building, instrument knowledge and instrument maintenance.

The instrument workshop is a specially equipped teaching facility that requires a special permit. The workshop has a paint shop and a wide range of carving and hand tools, power tools of different sizes, 6 vices, 2 solid workbenches, a sanding table and a separate paint booth. Students and staff at Uniarts Helsinki can use the workshop during the opening hours of the N Building after completing work safety training to obtain access rights.

The Sibelius Academy’s instrument workshop offers students courses in instrument building, knowledge and maintenance which are taught by instrument builders and repairers as well as other visiting lecturers.

Instrument building courses are for students to improve their handicraft skills and to learn about instrument building and its logic through practical experience in instrument-making Students can build a new instrument or repair their own instrument, develop an entirely new instrument or be provided with the tools for instrument-making.

In courses in instrument knowledge and maintenance, students focus on the structure, history, maintenance and transport of instruments, practise performing minor maintenance tasks and evaluate when they should take their instrument to an instrument builder for repairs. Students and teachers at Uniarts Helsinki are eligible to take these courses. Many of the courses are also available through Uniarts Helsinki’s Open University and continuous education.
