Sebastian Dumitrescu – Microtonal harmony as a composer’s tool
The first doctoral concert of Sebastian Dumitrescu explores the potential of using consonance and dissonance as compositional tools in the microtonal tuning system of 31 equal divisions of the octave.
The consonant intervals that are formed between the first five partials of the harmonic series are the basic building blocks of the diatonic scale. But when we expand the harmonic spectrum all the way up to the 11th partial, a multitude of new intervals and chords appear on the consonance-dissonance continuum. How can these be used to create coherence in music? How can one navigate the myriads of possibilities of harmonic expression that they bring?
