Reetta Näätänen’s first doctoral concert program consists of works inspired by cultures foreign to the composer
The doctoral concert aims to find answers on how to evaluate classical music with elements from other cultures today. Western art music has a long tradition of borrowing material, but what are the features especially with cross-cultural music that should be evaluated critically? What is the performer’s responsibility in the process? Is it possible to decolonize classical instrumental music? The concert includes works from different periods with influences from Africa, East Asia, and Australia.
