Sini Ilves

About the Artist
Sini Ilves (b. 1998) is a visual artist based in Helsinki whose paintings inhabit the space between perception, language, and embodied knowledge. Temporally charged pigments and medical imagery offer a way to examine pain, memory, and modes of distance.

About the artwork
My series of works consists of three oil paintings. The paintings bring together ideas about conflict, the interaction of colours, and the disunity of life. Corporeal forms and powerful colours defy interpretation without being completely out of reach. When I paint, I find it important to hold on to the work’s slow pace and ambiguity. The repelling effect of contrary elements creates tension, which reflects the sensitivity of the viewing experience. Symmetry challenges the friction between complementary colours and makes the paintings into concentrated, intensive units.
