Olli Valkola

About the Artist

Olli Valkola (b. 1992) grounds his artistic practice in the tension between technology, humanity and chance. In his multimodal work, error, disorder and reduction function as central tools through which warmth and personal vulnerability emerge. Valkola approaches experience as an open-ended process, where meanings are formed through temporal distance, acts of selection and the viewer’s own interpretation.

Olli Valkola, Clustering (Kasauma), 2024

About the artwork

Clustering (Kasauma) is a video work that examines the nature of the moving image from the perspective of photography. The name of the work, Clustering (Kasauma), alludes to a cluster of moments that creates an illusion of a unitary continuum. The work manages to capture fleeting moments by using matches similarly to a flashlight. The changes in light and motion are engraved into the background, creating a visual recording of time and space. The viewer can take part in the creation of the work at specific times. This will create dynamic visual material for the work, which is played back as a video recording during the gallery’s opening hours.
