Erkki Huilla, (are you ready, boots?) start walking, 2024

About the artwork

The body of work (are you ready, boots?) start walking consists of photographs and an asphalt installation inside the gallery space. Instead of examining asphalt as a material, the work explores asphalt as a space, while also investigating the artefactual nature of the material. In the work, the mundane everyday material is elevated from its functional level, which permits a broader examination of its spatial meaning. Interactive situations, social expectations, and ways of acting form a chain of events that unfold in the work’s core. Action that transforms into dramaturgy converts the material into a scene on which we give our daily performances.
