Joerg Fingerhut appointed Professor of Cognitive Science and the Arts at Uniarts Helsinki
Fingerhut’s five-year professorship at the Research Institute strengthens Uniarts Helsinki’s research profiling area in artist pedagogy and artistic thinking. The professorship is funded by the Research Council of Finland.
Professor Fingerhut currently works at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, where he serves as Principal Investigator and Research Group Leader of the Arts and Minds Lab at the Berlin School of Mind and Brain. He is also a Visiting Professor of Philosophy at the Department of Philosophy.
Fingerhut examines the interaction of culture and art with perception, emotion, and knowledge.
“Recently, I have been working on how emotions, such as interest in the urban environment and wonder in art, drive our exploration of the world,” he writes on his homepage.
Fingerhut will take up his professorship at Uniarts Helsinki in January 2027.
” Fingerhut’s expertise in the philosophy of mind and the cognitive sciences together with his experimental approach to researching art provide a very valuable new perspective for our university. His passionate commitment to forwarding these areas will certain inspire our research community”, says Head of the Research Institute Leena Rouhiainen.
