Viljamaria Raittila
About the Artist
Viljamaria Raittila (b. 1996, Kaustinen) paints elegiac scenes with greytinted colours. The oil and tempera paintings study the recurring themes of vulnerability, nostalgia, today’s decadence, shadows, reflections and translucent layers. The paintings are love letters to memories.

About the artwork
I have tried to listen to silence. Sometimes silence comes across by chance; during winter frost by a field, in between a lightningbolt and a thunderclap, or in the deep shadows of baroque paintings. I don’t know how to describe silence in words.
I think of painting as an extension of the body. Paintings themselves are shadows cast of the feelings, observations and thoughts experienced during the act of painting. Researching tenderness and elegiac travel alongside my artistic work. I have painted the series of four large scale paintings with dark tinted oil paints on linen canvas.
