Saga Suni

About the Artist

Saga Suni (b. 1998) works mainly with drawing and relief printmaking techniques. Suni constructs images using imaginative forms together with luminous, multilayered colours and colour combinations. The act of seeing, sensuality and emotional experiences that are difficult to put into words play a central role in her artworks.

About the artwork

Upon closer inspection of summer flowers, the centre can be seen to be almost glowing. On cloudy days, rays of sunlight pierce through the grey clouds as a golden-silver shimmer. The beautiful shell of the Nautilus – a species of mollusc – also shimmers in every imaginable colour. The energy that forms the basis of life, reveals itself to us in many forms. It brings about astonishing phenomena that we can perceive only a fraction of with our limited senses.

This work presents observations from my living environment. I am particularly fascinated by the colour and light phenomena found in nature, as well as the symmetrical features of living organisms. In the work, observations and themes blend together, creating a figure in which the viewer may find something that reminds them of their own surroundings.

The shimmer is created using monotype and relief printmaking techniques, hand-printed into nearly veil-like paper. The form and colour characteristics of this two-sided piece vary depending on the light and viewing angle. The image surface may transform from two into one, and the colours merge into new combinations.
