Ida Tomminen

About the Artist

Ida Tomminen (b. 1999, Sipoo) works in the expanded field of sculpture. In her practice, she explores the relationship between the flat image and the three-dimensional object. By reproducing found imagery removed from its original context, Tomminen seeks to understand what images actually do. Ideas of the universal, illusion and imitation, as well as questions of scale and the physical qualities of selected materials, inform her work.

About the artwork

A Photograph of an Embroidery Shop Window

The photographic work, mounted on a glass panel, depicts a view into an embroidery shop window. The space framed by the window becomes a flat picture plane.

I have retained the original arrangement of the embroidered pattern samples. The image has been enlarged and the other elements removed.

Door Bell I–III

Doorbell buttons are mounted on the wall, each bearing a symbol of a ringing bell. The image refers to a mechanically operated bell, temporally distant from the electric doorbell button.
