Hanna Peräkylä

About the Artist
Hanna Peräkylä (b. 1984) investigates the concept of landscape, the complexities of human–nature relations, and the hierarchical material structures. Her recent work has been shaped by word pairs materiality and cultivation, oblivion and time, controlled and free. Peräkylä is interested in the dialogue between two-dimensional and spatial working, in bringing drawing into space.

My work is grounded in my interest in the networks, contrasts and tactile qualities of matter. I reflect on the coexistence of the organic and the synthetic, on harvesting and on the circulation of matter. I wanted to assemble and dismantle, to capture and to release.
The work began with blue disposable shoe covers that visitors wore during an open event held on my family farm. The shoe covers led me to consider our contact with the ground and with material. I wondered from what angle I viewed farming itself, and what I became attached to. I created propositions, questions about the definition of place.
