About the Artist

Aleksi Myllyoja (b. 1992) works with sculptural methods, exploring materials and familiarising himself with their properties. He is interested in rule-based systems and digital technology. Recently, he has focused on questions about the necessary and unnecessary, work, and the illusion of objectivity.

About the artwork

My work, For digital machines, consists of a digital computing machine and a set of instructions given to it.

The task I have given the machine takes an eternity: it must determine the prime factors of every integer in order to play the desired composition. The task is characteristic of the machine and is something its predecessors were also built to perform.

The machine progresses one step at a time towards larger and larger numbers. However, the task becomes increasingly difficult, and the machine’s operation slows down.

A sound playing in the exhibition space is produced by the machine as it progresses through its task.
