Sarah Rowles

Introduction

I am a postdoctoral researcher in fine art pedagogy within the Academy of Fine Arts, Uniarts Helsinki. My research here investigates how the Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts at the Academy prepare students to become professional artists and how this term is understood by staff and students.

The study follows on from my 2024 doctoral research which looked at how artistic professionalism was presented to and understood by students on a BA Fine Art programme in London and the factors that shaped whether students planned to pursue careers as artists after their degree.

Before coming to Uniarts, I completed my Ed D at the Institute of Education, University College London. And I worked in the UK as Founding Director of Q-Art, as a research assistant (multiple), and as a lecturer in MA art education and BA fine art contextual studies.
