Nina Dahl-Tallgren

Introduction

Nina Dahl-Tallgren is a PhD researcher, Project Director and Research Leader for the SMIL project (Performing Arts in Learning) at the Theatre Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki. Her research and professional work focus on performative pedagogy and on how performing arts and artistic approaches can be integrated into learning environments to create new opportunities for embodied learning, participation and community. She is particularly interested in how drama, theatre and other performative practices can support children and young people in finding their voice, taking an active role and developing relationships with others and with their own learning within the school environment.
Her work combines educational research with practice-based development and collaboration with teachers, artists, researchers and educational organisations. With a background in theatre pedagogy, she has, among other things, led the development of audience/theatre-pedagogical practices within the theatre field in Finland. Her doctoral thesis, Towards a Performative Pedagogy (2024), explores how pedagogy can be understood as an open and evolving process in which knowledge emerges through encounters between art, people, bodies, material and environments.
Through the SMIL project, she develops models for the sustainable integration of performing arts in education and works across research, teacher education and pedagogical development. Her work is situated at the intersection of research, education and artistic practice.
