Introduction
Magnus Quaife is an artist, researcher, and educator. He is the Professor of Artists Pedagogy and Head of the Department of Curating and Theory at the Academy of Fine Arts Helsinki. His pedagogical research explores how artists teach, primarily within the context of post compulsory education in contemporary art both in institutional and extra institutional settings. Current research projects include Situated Artist Practices and Pedagogies which explores the significance of artist pedagogy for the development of artist led and extra institutional activity; and a Glossary of Terms for Teaching Artistic research conducted with members of the ARTIST/PEDAGOGY/RESEARCH Special Interest Group of the Society for Artistic Research. His artistic practice has been described as that of a conceptual artist interested in paint and as being connected through an approach akin to an archaeology of the modern and contemporary. He continues to research painting and has contributed an essay on painting and time to the Routledge Companion to Contemporary Painting (forthcoming 2027). He is the founder of the ARTIST/PEDAGOGY/RESEARCH specialist interest group of the Society for Artistic Research, lead for the Pedagogies Education Arts Research of UNIARTS Research Institute, sits on the steering committee for the International Network of Foundation Educators, and is on the international advisory board for the Journal of Contemporary Painting.
