Introduction
Liisa Ikonen is a professor on the Scenography degree programme at the University of the Arts Helsinki’s Theatre Academy, to which she transferred from Aalto University as part of a transfer of degree programmes 2021. Ikonen is a set designer by training and holds a Doctor of Arts degree. She has worked as a set designer and costume designer for over 30 years in both independent and institutional theatre settings. Liisa Ikonen’s doctoral thesis, *Dialogic Scenography: A Phenomenological Interpretation of an Alternative Working Process*, was examined at the University of Art and Design Helsinki in 2006 and was awarded the university’s first doctoral thesis prize the following year. Ikonen has been involved in multidisciplinary research projects on applied scenography and has served as the leader of the ‘Expanded Scenography’ research group and the ‘Floating Peripheries – Mediating the Sense of Place’ (2017–21) research project at the Department of Film and Scenography at Aalto University. In 2019, Liisa Ikonen was appointed Finland’s national representative for the ‘Fragments’ exhibition at the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space, where her doctoral thesis was presented alongside works that have marked a national breakthrough and influenced new generations of artists.
As a researcher, Ikonen is interested in the changing working practices of set designers, alternative working methods and areas of applied practice – in other words, the future of scenography.
