Introduction
Lauren O’Neal works at the intersection of installation, choreographic thinking, and curation. Currently, she is an associate professor of the practice at the Graduate Program in Arts Administration at Boston University, and a Research Affiliate at the University of the Arts Helsinki's Research Institute. Previously, O’Neal was the director and curator of the Lamont Gallery at Phillips Exeter Academy and a visiting fellow at the Harvard University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. O'Neal has exhibited her work at the Portland Museum of Art, the Theater Academy of Finland, the Housatonic Museum of Art, Boston Center for the Arts, and Purdue University, among others. She has performed in the work of Trisha Brown, Heidi Latsky, and Ryan McNamara, and has been a recipient of grants and residencies from Vermont Studio Center, Life on a Leaf, Artscape Gibraltar Point, the Nelimarkka Museum, Frame Contemporary Art, and the Somerville Arts Council. O’Neal has presented her work and research at conferences including the Nordic Forum for Dance Research, the College Art Association Annual Conference, Nomadikon, the Southern Humanities Council Conference, and Marist College. She has developed arts and cultural programs for the Federal Reserve Bank, Young Audiences, the Somerville Museum, the Sarah Doyle Gallery at Brown University, and the Dance Complex, as well as taught at institutions including the Massachusetts College of Art + Design, the Art Institute of Boston, and the deCordova Museum. As an arts writer, she has written for Art New England and The Art Guide. O’Neal received her MFA from Maine College of Art, an EdM from Harvard University, and an AB from Wellesley College. She received her doctoral degree from the University of the Arts Helsinki with a dissertation publication entitled "Assembling a Praxis: Choreographic Thinking and Curatorial Agency."
