Kaisla Pohjalainen
About the Artist
Kaisla Pohjalainen observes situations and sensations that are fragile, giving them a flickering form through painting. Her materially tuned works function as thin containers for things which are ephemeral and fleeting.

About the artwork
In my series of paintings I’ve lingered on themes of rest and leisure. The technique I use, in which the canvas is primed with chalk, produces a smooth and fragile surface, reminiscent of eggshells. Chalk tolerates water well, and this allows the paintings to be washed. Under the tap, I may wipe away mistakes and dead ends, making room for new directions.
I paint everyday sensory observations with watercolours. I reflect on the corporeality of noticing and observing. While in a state of alertness, being with the environment becomes porous.
