Introduction

Markus Virtanen is a doctoral researcher, composer, and music journalist from Helsinki. His dissertation project in the field of music history at the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki is titled "To be a Composing Woman in the World - Composer Ann-Elise Hannikainen as a Mirror of Her Time". Virtanen has previously studied musicology at the universities of Turku and Helsinki. His research interests focus on the history of Finnish classical music, particularly the roles of women, sexual minorities, and other marginalized groups in classical music.

Virtanen's compositions include two operas, a cappella mass, organ and vocal music, as well as theater music. In recent years, Virtanen has been particularly interested in renewing the church music genre and exploring its boundaries. This is exemplified by his four-part cantata series "The Liturgical Year of Our Time," which reflects on Christianity's relationship with issues such as capitalism, climate change, and sexual ethics.

Virtanen has worked as a music journalist at the Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE) since 2007. Additionally, he has produced recordings and prepared several sheet music editions of Ann-Elise Hannikainen's works.
