Adam Szymczyk’s Lecture Opens the Academy of Fine Arts’ Spring

One of the most prominent figures in contemporary art, Polish art critic and curator Adam Szymczyk will be visiting Finland in January 2018, invited by Uniarts Helsinki's Academy of Fine Arts and Saastamoinen Foundation. During his two-day visit, he will hold a Saastamoinen Keynote Lecture and meet the Academy’s students.

Szymczyk’s visit is part of the internationalisation programme of visual arts, started by the Academy of Fine Arts and Saastamoinen Foundation in 2015. In addition to lectures, the programme also includes international mentoring and a residency programme for the Academy’s Master’s students and alumni.

Szymczyk (born in 1970) has made a name for himself as the artistic director of the Documenta 14, curator of the Berlin Biennale in 2008, as well as the director of Kunsthalle Basel. An esteemed art magazine ArtReview recently named him the 4th most influential figure in contemporary art.

Adam Szymczyk’s lecture will be the third Saastamoinen Keynote Lecture. The lectures are held once a year and internationally significant figures in contemporary art are invited to give a lecture. The lecture series started in January 2015 by Okwui Enwezor, Director of the Haus der Kunst in Munich and the Artistic Director of the 2015 Venice Biennale. In 2017, the lecture was given by the artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset, curators of this year’s Istanbul Biennial.
