Global Fest: Middle Eastern Orchestra
Founded in Helsinki, The Middle Eastern Orchestra is a unique Arabic and Middle Eastern orchestra, which is the first of its kind in Finland.
Another unique aspect of the orchestra is its multiculturality, consisting of 25-30 professional musicians from 10-15 different cultural backgrounds. Music is an important channel to transmit the richness and beauty of the Middle Eastern musical tradition and the orchestra provides an opportunity to create a bridge between Western and Middle Eastern cultures, reminding us that music is the common language of the world.
The programme consists of Middle Eastern classical and folk pieces including Arabic, Persian, Turkish and Kurdish music, arranged in creative ways by members of the orchestra
The artistic director and founder of the Middle Eastern Orchestra is oud player Ali Haithem from Iraq.
Now in its fourth year, Global Fest is the annual festival of students, teachers, alumni and guest performers in the Global Music degree programme at the Sibelius Academy. The festival celebrates cultural diversity and builds bridges for intercultural communication, understanding and collaboration through music and the arts in general.
This year, the festival takes place from 11 to 13 December and features performers from Aruba, Australia, Brazil, Catalonia, China, Finland, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Greece, Nepal, Senegal, Serbia, Spain and Tanzania.
