Sibelius and His Teachers
Martin Wegelius, Albert Becker, Robert Fuchs and Karl Goldmark were teachers of composition and music theory whom Jean Sibelius studied with in Helsinki, Berlin and Vienna. During their lifetimes, these four men were highly regarded composers, at least in their home countries. Afterwards, their works have only rarely been played in concerts. It seems that Sibelius drew little direct stylistic influence from his teachers. However, this concert presents a selection of seldom-heard piano and chamber music and songs that sheds light on the musical environment of Sibelius’s student years. The concert is one of the anniversary events of Sibelius 150 jubilee year.
